The Myth of: Reparenting Yourself

Week 17: Reparenting Yourself

MythInner Child

There's a double myth about healing:

1. "Only therapists can heal childhood wounds"

2. "You should be able to do this alone"

Both are incomplete.

The truth about healing support:

Therapy can be incredibly valuable—especially for complex trauma. A skilled therapist provides safety, expertise, and witness that's hard to replicate alone.

But therapy isn't the ONLY path. And it's not accessible to everyone.

Much healing CAN happen through:

  • Self-study and reflection
  • Journaling and writing
  • Body-based practices
  • Supportive relationships
  • Creative expression
  • Spiritual practice
  • Time and intention

The key is consistent, loving attention to yourself. Whether that comes through therapy, self-practice, or both depends on your situation.

Try this reframe:

Instead of: "I can't heal without therapy" or "I should do this alone"

Try: "I will use whatever resources I have—professional help when possible, self-practice always. Healing is a journey I support in many ways."

Grief Compass Journal is one tool for your healing toolkit.
