A Small Step: Family & Expectations

Difficult family members often push buttons with predictable topics: your relationship status, career, weight, lifestyle choices, when you're having kids...

Having a script ready helps you stay grounded instead of reactive.

Notice any tension rising just thinking about those questions.

The "acknowledge and redirect" technique:

When faced with a triggering question or comment:

  1. Acknowledge briefly (don't engage with the content)
  2. Redirect (change the subject smoothly)

Examples:

"When are you getting married?"
→ "Not sure yet! Hey, have you seen [show/movie]? I've been meaning to ask what you think."

"You've gained weight."
→ "Mmm, bodies change. How's your garden doing this season?"

"Why don't you have a better job?"
→ "It's working for me right now. What's everyone doing this weekend?"

Practice today:

Think of the most likely triggering question you'll face at your next family gathering.

Write out your acknowledge-and-redirect response. Practice saying it out loud.

Having words ready bypasses the freeze response. When they ask, you won't scramble—you'll just execute the script you've rehearsed.
