The Myth of: Decision Fatigue

We believe more choice equals more freedom. But research says otherwise.

The paradox of choice:

Psychologist Barry Schwartz found that:

  • More options lead to WORSE decisions
  • More options lead to LESS satisfaction with chosen option
  • More options lead to MORE regret
  • More options lead to PARALYSIS

In one famous study, a jam display with 24 options attracted more attention than one with 6. But the 6-option display sold 10 times more jam.

More choice doesn't help you. It freezes you.

The myth of freedom through options:

Society says: "You can be anything! Do anything! Live anywhere!"

This sounds liberating. But it also means:

  • You're responsible for every outcome
  • You can always imagine a "better" choice
  • Nothing feels permanent or certain
  • Every path has infinite what-ifs

Sometimes, constraints are freedom. Fewer options means clearer direction.

Try this reframe:

Instead of: "I need more options to make a good choice."

Try: "I need fewer options to make ANY choice. Limiting options is strategic, not lazy."
