Understanding: The Art of Doing Nothing
When was the last time you did... nothing?
Not relaxing-while-scrolling. Not "resting" with Netflix. Actually nothing.
Most of us have forgotten how.
The Dutch concept of Niksen:
In the Netherlands, there's a word: "niksen." It means doing nothing without purpose—literally being idle without guilt.
Not meditating (which has a purpose). Not relaxing (which is for recovery). Just... being. Existing. Looking out a window. Sitting with nothing to do.
Why we've lost this:
- Productivity culture says idle time is wasted
- Phones fill every micro-gap with stimulation
- We feel guilty when not "doing"
- We've forgotten that being IS enough
Modern life has colonized every moment. Even our leisure is productive—"self-care," "learning," "content."
True nothing has become radical.
What doing nothing gives you:
- Mental space for creativity to emerge
- Nervous system regulation
- Reconnection with inner life
- A profound statement: you are enough without doing
This week, we practice the lost art of nothing.
Stillness Cards guide the art of productive stillness.
