The Myth of: Sleep Sanctuary

There's a myth that tough people can sleep anywhere:

"I can sleep on a plane, train, floor—anywhere. Environment doesn't matter."

Maybe you can fall asleep anywhere. But is it quality sleep?

The truth about sleep quality:

Not all sleep is equal. A night in a noisy, bright, uncomfortable space produces lighter, more fragmented sleep with less time in deep and REM stages.

You might get 8 hours. But it's not the same as 8 hours in optimal conditions.

The "I can sleep anywhere" brag might actually mean "I'm so exhausted I pass out despite poor conditions."

Environment affects:

  • Time to fall asleep
  • Sleep depth
  • REM cycles
  • Number of awakenings
  • Feeling rested upon waking

A 10% improvement in sleep environment can mean hours more of true rest over a week.

Reframe:

Instead of: "I can sleep anywhere—environment doesn't matter."

Try: "I'm worth more than barely-adequate sleep. I deserve a space designed for rest."

You spend 1/3 of your life sleeping. Invest in where that happens.
