Understanding: The Weight of Expectations

They wanted the best for you. They had dreams for your future.

But their love came with expectations. And those expectations might be heavier than you can carry.

The weight of parental expectations:

Many of us carry invisible expectations:

  • The career they wanted for you
  • The relationship timeline they envisioned
  • The life path they thought was "best"
  • The person they hoped you'd become

Some were spoken. Some were just... felt. Either way, they sit on your shoulders.

When expectations become burdens:

Parental expectations often come from love—but love delivered through pressure isn't fully received.

You might be living your whole life for their approval. Making choices based on their dreams, not yours. Feeling like a disappointment even when objectively succeeding.

A liberating truth:

You are not responsible for your parents' expectations.

You are responsible for living YOUR life authentically.

These can coexist: loving your parents AND choosing your own path. Honoring their intentions AND making different choices.

This week, we explore that tension.

Grief Compass Journal helps process family expectation wounds.
