The Myth of: Broken Heart Season
There's a myth that "strong" people maintain constant mood regardless of weather:
"It's just rain. You shouldn't let it affect you. Weather is external—mood should be internal."
This denies your biological reality.
The truth about seasonal mood:
Humans evolved in close connection with environment. Your ancestors lived, slept, worked by natural rhythms.
Your body STILL responds to:
- Light levels
- Temperature changes
- Barometric pressure
- Seasonal cues
Pretending weather doesn't affect you is fighting biology. Accepting it is wisdom.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):
For some, seasonal mood changes are clinical:
- Deep depression in certain seasons
- Significant life impairment
- Requiring treatment
Others have milder "seasonal blues." Both are real. Both are valid.
Reframe:
Instead of: "I should be happy no matter the weather."
Try: "My mood naturally shifts with seasons. I can honor this rhythm while still caring for myself."
Grief Compass Journal helps navigate seasonal mood shifts.
