What Your Body Knows: The Art of Saying NO

Week 8: The Art of Saying NO

BodyBoundaries

Your body votes before your mind decides.

That split-second heaviness when someone asks a favor. That tiny clench when the email pings. That subtle drag when you think about the commitment.

These are body-nos. Do you notice them?

Learning your body's "no" signals:

Common signs your body is saying no:

  • Jaw tightening
  • Shoulders rising toward ears
  • Stomach dropping or knotting
  • Sudden fatigue or heaviness
  • Shallow breathing
  • Sighing before responding
  • Impulse to look away or check out

These signals happen fast—often before conscious thought catches up. If you're not paying attention, you miss them entirely and say yes from habit.

Try this body-check practice:

For the next three days, before responding to any request:

1. Pause (even 3 seconds helps)

2. Scan your body quickly—stomach, chest, shoulders, jaw

3. Notice: Is there openness/lightness? Or contraction/heaviness?

4. Let your answer reflect what you found

Your body is an ancient wisdom system. It's been saying no on your behalf for years. Time to start listening.

When you've been ignoring your body's no, Inner Spark Recovery can help you reconnect with your truth.
